Inaccessible sites. Who’s to blame?

ConflictI was recently asked by a client to take a look at a web service that was offering an easy way for him to set up his web site and market it at the same time. Normally this sort of request gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end because you just know what they’re going to end up with. On this occasion however, the place he was directing me to was for a highly reputable company in the UK, British Telecom.

Freebies

Free iconsYou know how you sometimes need a few icons to stick on your site or your blog, and you go googling for freebies and get 96 million sites coming back usually with appalling quality stuff that you wouldn’t be seen dead associating with?

Well I went on a hunt for some top quality images that I could use on client sites and having picked myself up off the floor at the prices and deciding I should have paid more attention in Graphic Design classes, I started to trawl the freebies again to see if there was anything remotely usable that I could possibly tart up a bit.

A layman’s guide to Accessibility

I occasionally help out a computer class. The group is comprised mostly of adults in their 50s who have taken to computing in a big way. They’re all very keen and full of questions.

I volunteered to assist by going to the class once a week to pitch in but they didn’t want to put me out. Very big on self help this group, and that’s great, they learn as they try things but there are the odd occasions when they just can’t figure something out. So I volunteered to do phone support, something they were much more comfortable with asking for and it has to be said that the phone doesn’t ring very often.

How not to build web sites….. Part 2

In my last post on this matter How not to build web sites, I listed a few of the things that really drive me nuts but it’s always good to have a few graphic examples for those that are not convinced.

In the annals of web design there are disasters, complete disasters and unmitigated disasters. Vincent Flanders documents many of these on his web site Web Pages That Suck and a good afternoon’s entertainment can be had looking through there.

Worldwide Accessibility enforcement?

AccessibilityA successful case of discrimination has been brought against a United States training company by a United Kingdom citizen with a disability.

It seems that US companies can be successfully sued under the UK Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) if they routinely provide goods and/or services to people in the UK, whether they have a physical presence in the UK or not.
