Freebies
You know how you sometimes need a few icons to stick on your site or your blog, and you go googling for freebies and get 96 million sites coming back usually with appalling quality stuff that you wouldn’t be seen dead associating with?
Well I went on a hunt for some top quality images that I could use on client sites and having picked myself up off the floor at the prices and deciding I should have paid more attention in Graphic Design classes, I started to trawl the freebies again to see if there was anything remotely usable that I could possibly tart up a bit.
That’s when I came across these sets. You can see a few in the pic on the right. Top quality, different styles, usable on the web and free. So I signed up, also free, and was promptly given a set of tokens which refresh each month, that I could use to “buy” the sets I wanted. How cool is that.
Of course what happens is you use your tokens up then decide you want some more sets. The site supports itself by selling full icon sets to those with the money, which, compared to the competition is actually pretty reasonable price-wise, and by offering a VIP paid upgrade for about £20 a year that nets you 3 times the monthly amount of tokens. There’s no obligation to do either of these however and if you’re the patient type, unlike me, then you just go get more sets the following month.
For the competitive amongst you, you can join in the trading game. See which members you can offload free sets to in order to increase your points bank. A great idea for when you’re at a loose end.
To go there and sign up or just have a look round you can click on the icon graphic above or use this link.

I must say, those are really nice. If I ever need some icons I know where I’ll try first. Thanks Gill!

Some of them are not really my style and are probably better for gaming but a lot of them are very nice and ideal for sites. Plus, if you have a devious mind, there are a few that can be modified slightly. For example, there’s a set of robots which didn’t initially seem too much use but when I thought about it, you could remove bits like the antennae and have a pretty good mobile phone icon. Tried it and it works great.

I also like the famfamfam icons - nice and neat plus free which is a bonus. I met the chap behind them (Mark James) at the Geek in the Park picnic last year - a nice, polite young lad - which description is a sad indictment on my age frankly.

Yes I have a load of those but I find some too small. Maybe it’s something to do with my age…. and the eyesight.
