Painfully Funny
There are thousands of blogs around and many are exceedingly banal. People set them up purely because they think they ought to and I’ve lost track of the “what should I make my blog about?” posts on Bulletin Boards. My answer is usually along the lines of - don’t bother until you have something to say, but occasionally one surfaces with a really interesting idea.
I came across one today that I should really call unusual rather than good. No, actually, it’s appallingly good in an atrociously bad kind of way.
The premise behind Warren Myles’s blog allyourtop40arebelongtous (N.B. Site contains bad language) is that for a period of one year, Warren will buy and then record his own cover version of whatever is number one in the charts in any given week.
Warren is not a musician and has no real instruments so all his backing tracks are being done on his Game Boy. The result is the most hysterically painful music you’re likely to hear. They’re so bad, they’re good. I’m particularly fond of the cover of the Leona Lewis hit, ‘Bleeding Love’ which features Warren’s screaming vocals, thankfully in the background. But my favourite has to be Sugababes track “About you now” which almost sounds like the original…. on a good day….. with a following wind.
Each post has a link to download the track along with Warren’s sketches of the covers. Neither the music nor the artwork are world class from a professional point of view but for entertainment they’re classic! I suspect when word gets around about this his bandwidth will go through the roof.

hey jaybee,
thanks for reading my blog and for the comments. glad you enjoyed reading and listening ( perhaps!) to the music. although debatable, i do have some kind of musical prowess, i suppose.
i play other instruments and in various bands and things. so i thought id clear that up, i wouldnt want to give the impression and pretend to be some kind of outsider artist, not that it makes much of a difference to the quality of the music.. but i suppose it gives me less of an excuse when im out of tune. in my defence though, a lot of its done on first take, and its more of a lo-fi experimental project than something i deem to be reflective of my abilities of a musician. its kind of a first take, stripped down impression of the pop song after hearing it a few times. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. but it keeps me busy.
